Hardwood Flooring End Joints

hardwood flooring end joints

I am installing my first ever hardwood floor. it's pre-finished 3/4" solid wood, and it's been pretty fun. i've noticed that some of my end joints have some very tiny gaps on one side of the joint (flush on the other side). i often have to look closely to notice, but some are visible from standing up.. Rack the floor correctly, which means to stagger the end joints randomly and with enough space between them to prevent the end joints from separating. racking a laminate floor is a little more difficult than racking a hardwood floor because laminate planks are all the same length, whereas hardwood boards tend to come in different lengths.. "the flooring store said to leave one quarter inch gaps for expansion at the walls...now the boards are lifting off the floor." ill informed advice like this often leads to floor problems. many flooring sales people unfamiliar with hardwood flooring assume expansion is the same as laminate flooring..
